Neben Surfen und Party machen kann man in Bali auch ganz gut skaten z.B im Donkey Skatepark.

Wir waren dort um Volcom Skateboarder Indra Leonardo zu treffen, mit ihm ein bisschen zu quatschen, ihm beim skaten zuzusehen und um ganz nebenbei unsere selbst gemachten Graffitis vom Vortag zu bewundern ... ICE ICE BABY.

Channel Island Surfboards wurde 1969 von Al Merrick in Santa Barbara, Kalifornien gegründet und produziert seit je her high quality surfboards. Einst surften Legenden wie Tom Curren oder Shaun Tomson diese Boards und bis heute werden sie von den  besten Surfern der Welt wie Kelly Slater, Dane Reynolds, Jordy Smith und Rob Machardo benutzt. Weiterhin wird Zusammenarbeit mit den Profi Surfen  ständig versucht Boards zu entwickeln, die die bestmöglichste Surfperformance ermöglichen.

Interview mit Chris McHutchinson, Surfboard shaper by Channel Islands Surfboards:

Hi Chris, can you give us an idea of your shaping background and what is your philosophy in shaping boards?

I´ve made surfboards for 30 years and I worked for some of the big surf companies. I had the opportunity to work together with top pro surfers so I guess I had a lot of good feedback for building surfboards.

The boards now are built for high performance surfing and we build premium Surfboards for the world´s greatest surfers. We always worked in an international set up with great talents together and got good feedback from the top surfers like Kelly Slater. So I guess the philosophy behind the CI surfboards is just  “top in premium materials, best surfers in the world and the best product”.

So the special thing about the surfboards is, that you work closely together with the Pro Surfers and get feedback?

Yes exactly. It’s a lot about marketing and building up a hype but at the end of the day it´s all about a fantastic product and the feedback helps. It’s a great product and everyone wants to have it.

Can you give us a short overview about the different forms and shapes of surfboards?

I guess surfboard design is just a pretty basic principle. If you are surfing small waves or you are a beginner you need a bigger board, wider, thicker with more volume.

If you are intermediate you probably ride a mid-length board, narrower nose, less volume.

If you are a good surfer I guess you can ride every board.

Good surfers ride like smaller and thinner boards. More sensitive in the performance and for big waves .

So I guess this is just a rule of time and how your surfing is.

So that means, the thinner the board the easier to control it?

Yes. Once you become a better surfer you want to control the board a bit differently. You want to do sharper or faster turns. So I take you bit of the volume out of the board, making them wild so they are easier to turn on.

And the performance not only depends on the shape of the board but also on the Fins?

Yeah, good question.

Yes, also Fins have a lot to do with it. You can ride a single fin, which is like a retro style board, you can ride a twin fin, which is another style of retro board, or the mainstream is like a three or four fins. So quart fins and three fins are pretty much the same, it´s just a personal choice on your riding style.

What surfboard do you ride?

I ride a pretty small board. It´s called #4 from CI Surfboards and it´s a concept boards built for Dane Reynolds, a top pro surfer from California. The board I ride is 5’8’’. It´s a bit smaller but has a little more wideness and thickness.

What do you think, is there any progress in surfboard shaping?

I think just the technology of surfboards. The surfboards become lighter and stronger. The technique we´re using is the same manufacturing technique that has been in the market for like 50 years. It’s just a brilliant technique.

What advice would you give someone who wants to buy a surfboard?

Just do your research by name-brand and you pay for what you get. I hear a lot of the time people buy a cheap board but shit equipment doesn’t last. If you buy a new surfboard by a brand-name you get at least some resale.

Specially when you are a beginner you get more progress when you´re riding a good board because it’s a little bit easier than riding a no-name board?

It happens a lot of the time that beginners buy like a budget surfboard and sometimes it can be disadvantage. Like it would be the wrong style of board. If you´re a beginner you just want a good size surfboard with some volume in it so it’s easy to paddle.

Am Sonntag war es endlich soweit, wir starteten unseren ersten kleinen Ausflug als UPSIDE DOWN Team.

Nachdem alle Schlafmützen aufgeweckt , unsere neuen T shirts abgeholt wurden und wir alle im Bali Green Surf versammelt waren, starteten wir los Richtung ULUWATU.

(Die Polizeieskorte wäre zwar nicht nötig gewesen ...hehe. Aber wenn das UpsidDown Team reist, kann schon mal passieren, dass man Begleitschutz braucht :P . )

Am führen Nachmittag waren wir dann in ULUWATU , einfach dem Sufspot in Bali.

Dort trifft man von Zeit zu Zeit schon einmal auf richtig bekannte Profi Surfer.
Also nichts wie hin um einfach in einem der unzähligen kleinen Restaurants zu chillen, eine Kokosnuss zu schlürfen und die Profis bei der arbeit zu bestaunen, wie sie eine Welle nach der anderen killen.

Weiter ging unser Trip Richtung Canggu, vorbei an wunderschönen Reisterassen um zu unserem nächsten Ziel, TANAH LOT zu gelangen.

Kaum dort angekommen vepasste uns der Wettergott natürlich eine kurze aber saftige Regendusche. (Die wir ganz unter uns eh schon dringenst nötig hatten.)
Davon unbeirrt machten wir uns die letzten Meter zu Fuß auf Richtung Tempel.

Pura TANAH LOT - Land inmitten des Meeres - hat auch nach dem hundertsten Besuch nichts an seiner Faszination verloren.
Der bekannte Hindutempel ist nur bei Ebbe zu erreichen und ansonsten durch das Meer vom Festland getrennt.

Zeit ein bisschen seine Gedanken schweifen zu lassen, sich vom Tempel Priester mit dem heiligen Wasser "reinigen" zu lassen und mit allen gemeinsam den Sonnenuntergang zu genießen.

Mittlerweile knurrte uns allen schon der Bauch und wir konnten unser nächstes Ziel ECHO BEACH kaum erwarten ... also ab ins Auto und nichts wie los.

- Hard to find , hard to forget - Echo Beach.

Fisch, Muscheln, Shrimps, Steak, Salate uvm. ... einfach alles was man sich für ein leckeres BBQ wünscht, um in gemütlicher Atmosphäre direkt am Meer einen schönen Abend mit Freunden zu verbringen.

Ein gelungener Abschluss für einen gelungenen Trip.

Und jetzt nichts wie ab nach Hause, denn mittlerweile waren wir alle schon ziemlich KOPFBANANE!!!!
